Heavy and Light!

We have been learning about the measurement of weight. Using the HUGE balance scales, the children worked together to compare heavier and lighter amounts of sand.
They filled one bucket and it went down. "It's so heavy because its got lots of sand" they explained. "That is lighter," pointing to the empty bucket.
It took them a long time to balance the scales!
Why do you think it took so long?
What could we do next time to balance the scales quickly?
