British Values
16 Feb 2024
Here at Downsell Primary school, we value and celebrate being a part of Britain. Whilst we celebrate the culture and heritage of all of our pupils, we recognise that the idea behind British Values actually applies in so much of what we do and even applies outside of Britain.
At Downsell Primary School, we recognise that through the teaching and promoting of British Values we are preparing our children for life in modern Britain and helping them to learn how to become citizens of the world.
British Values covers 5 areas:
- Democracy
- The Rule of Law
- Individual Liberty
- Mutual Respect
- Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
As well as actively promoting British values, the opposite also applies: we would actively challenge pupils, staff or parents expressing opinions contrary to fundamental British values, including ‘extremist’ views.

The teaching of British Values is line with the duty placed on schools (Section 26, Counter-Terrorism and Security Act 2015) to have ‘due regard to the need to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism’. This duty is known as The Prevent Duty.
