Physical Education (PE)
At Downsell Primary School, our key aim for PE is to ensure that all children have the opportunity to take part in physical activities and are exposed to high quality PE curriculum that allows them to shine and demonstrate their skills set in a range of different sports.
PE develops students' competence and confidence to take part in a range of physical activities that become a central part of their lives, both in and out of school.
Children have the opportunity to attend borough wide competitions and events and we have a fantastic working relationship with local and national sports organisations such as Leyton Orient Football Club, Sports for Schools and others. We understand that a high-quality PE curriculum enables all students to enjoy and succeed in many kinds of physical activity which enables them to succeed in other areas of the curriculum and boosts their self-esteem, communication skills and various other benefits. We also offer swimming lessons for our pupils in KS2 and aim to have children being competent swimmers.
This is why PE is important at Downsell Primary School and consequently, we have adopted the REAL PE scheme of work which is proven to help support EVERY child to develop their physical literacy, emotional and thinking skills to achieve in PE, sport and life. REAL PE is unique, its child centred approach transforms how we teach PE to include, challenge and support EVERY child. It is fully aligned to the National Curriculum and focuses on the development of agility, balance and coordination (ABC), healthy competition and cooperative learning through a unique and market leading approach to teaching and learning in PE. Additionally, we have devised our own PE curriculum which incorporate sequencing and progression to work alongside REAL PE which is delivered by our trained teachers and use assessment tools to identify gaps which informs us of our future planning. Our core values at Downsell Primary School are: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience. All lessons embed those core values and we aspire to teach children that PE is a fundamental part of their learning.

Each year, our Year 6 pupils take part in a 12-week block of swimming lessons at Leytonstone Leisure centre.
