What is Online Safety?

Online Safety is all about teaching pupils the necessary skills needed to stay safe online whether it's browsing, searching for information, completing homework or watching clips or videos.It is an important part of keeping children safe at Donwsell Primary School. We have extensive security measures in place in school, which are monitored both internally and externally, to help safeguard pupils from potential dangers or unsuitable material. Any online safety incidents are recorded and managed. 
Here are the things that we do at Downsell Primary School:

• Class assemblies
• Online Safety Board 
• Digital leader meetings discussing online safety
• EYFS Online Safety Assemblies
• Computing unit ends with an online safety focus for every year group
• E-safety focus of the week in all classes
• PSHE lessons/units acrross year groups 
• Special events and days eg cyberbullying during Anti-Bullying Week, Safer Internet Day
• Working towards achieveing the Online Safety Mark for the third time
• Parent workshops
• Parent guides
• Online Safety Breakfast Mornings - 1 per term
• Online Safety articles on the website - parent guide emailed out every week 
• Online Safety Staff CPD 

5 SMART Tips
Safe:
Keep safe by being careful not to give out personal information when you’re chatting or posting online. Personal information includes your email address, phone number and password.
Meet:
Meeting someone you have only been in touch with online can be dangerous. Only do so with your parents’ or carers’ permission and even then only when they can be present. Remember online friends are still strangers even if you have been talking to them for a long time.
Accepting:
Accepting emails, IM messages, or opening files, images or texts from people you don’t know or trust can lead to problems – they may contain viruses or nasty messages!
Reliable:
Someone online might lie about who they are and information on the internet may not be true. Always check information by looking at other websites, in books, or with someone who knows. If you like chatting online it’s best to only chat to your real world friends and family.
Tell:
Tell a parent, carer or a trusted adult if someone, or something, makes you feel uncomfortable or worried, or if you or someone you know is being bullied online.
